What was happening

In context

Donald E. Smith was born in Michigan in 1890, entering a world undergoing rapid industrialization along the Detroit River. Settling in Wyandotte, a growing industrial hub characterized by shipbuilding, steelmaking, and chemical production, he established deep roots in the Downriver community. In the 1910s, he married Mary Kathleen McEvoy, an Irish immigrant who had arrived from County Laois, and together they raised a close-knit family of eight children. Donald lived through transformative historical events, registering for the draft during World War I and weathering the deadly 1918 influenza epidemic. When their daughter Eileen was born prematurely in 1920 weighing just two pounds, Donald and Mary nursed her to health in an improvised kitchen shoebox incubator. During the grueling years of the Great Depression, Donald worked steadfastly to support his household amidst plant slowdowns and regional labor organizing. He witnessed Wyandotte's tremendous production contributions during World War II and the prosperous postwar expansion that followed, living in Wayne County until his death in 1964 at age seventy-four.
