What was happening

In context

Alicia Deegan lived an extraordinary ninety-year lifespan that witnessed the complete transformation of Ireland from a distressed British colonial possession into an independent modern republic. Born in 1865 in Lower Forest near Mountmellick in Queen's County (Laois), she grew up during the post-Famine decades marked by intense tenant agitation and the rise of the Irish National Land League. In 1883, she married farmer Patrick McEvoy, settling in Capard and bearing several children, including daughter Mary Kathleen. Following Patrick's untimely death in 1898, Alicia demonstrated immense resilience as a widowed matriarch, managing the household and farm independently while her daughter emigrated to America. Under the Wyndham Land Act of 1903, Alicia likely witnessed tenant farmers finally obtaining legal ownership of their ancestral soil. In her middle and later years, she navigated the tumultuous birth of the Irish Free State, living through the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the Civil War, and the trade hardships of the 1930s Economic War. She lived through World War II in neutral Ireland before passing away in 1955 at the venerable age of ninety.
