What was happening

In context

Jacques Ménard lived through the turbulent collapse of the French colonial empire in North America and the early decades of British rule in Canada. Born in November 1750 in Beauport along the St. Lawrence River just downstream from Quebec City, his childhood was dramatically shattered by the Seven Years' War. In 1759, Beauport served as the fortified frontline during the Battle of Beauport and the subsequent Siege of Quebec, exposing young Jacques to naval bombardments and military occupation. Following the 1763 Treaty of Paris, he came of age under British military and civil authority, navigating the critical passage of the Quebec Act of 1774 and the disruptive American invasion of Canada in 1775. In July 1783, Jacques married Marie-Thérèse Desmarais in L'Assomption, relocating to the Lanaudière region northeast of Montreal to establish a farmstead. There, he raised a family that included son Julien Maximilien Ménard, participating in traditional habitant agriculture and experiencing the political reorganization of the Constitutional Act of 1791 before his death in September 1796 at age forty-five.
