What was happening

In context

Françoise Vachon spent her sixty-year life in the seigneurial landscape of Beauport along the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Born in March 1689 to Vincent Vachon and Louise Cadieux, she spent her earliest infancy amid the terrors of the 1690 naval assault on Quebec, when English troops attempted to land upon the Beauport shores. Her youth was overshadowed by the bitter smallpox epidemic of 1702–1703, which claimed the life of her mother. In January 1712, Françoise married farmer Jean Ménard in Beauport, embarking on nearly four decades of family life centered around church, household production, and seigneurial duties. She gave birth to numerous children, including Joseph-Louis Ménard in 1724. Her adult years coincided with the expansive 'Thirty Years' Peace' following the Treaty of Utrecht, during which Beauport's farms flourished and the grand Chemin du Roy linked local communities. As she entered her final decade, renewed imperial conflict during King George's War brought inflation, goods shortages, and coastal tensions back to the parish. Françoise passed away peacefully in Beauport the day after Christmas in 1749.
