What was happening

In context

Marie Ladouceur lived a long, resilient life that bridged nineteenth-century French Canada and industrializing America. Baptized at the historic Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal in August 1816, she grew up in the bustling commercial heart of Lower Canada during years punctuated by recurring cholera epidemics and political strife. In August 1843, she married Julien Maximilien Ménard in Sainte-Mélanie, settling in the rugged Laurentian foothills of Joliette County and giving birth to children including son Julius Manore. Facing harsh economic realities and rural land scarcity in Quebec, Marie and Julien joined the early migration stream of French Canadians venturing south of the border, establishing a home in Monroe County, Michigan, in the mid-1850s. Widowed shortly after their move in 1858, Marie demonstrated extraordinary fortitude, raising her children alone through the tumult of the American Civil War and regional economic depressions. In her final decades, she moved to nearby Toledo, Ohio, watching the Great Lakes region evolve into an industrial powerhouse before passing away in 1905 at age eighty-nine.
