What was happening

In context

James Armstrong McCance lived during an era of tremendous continental expansion and agricultural transformation in the United States. Born in 1811 in the Appalachian border region of Pennsylvania and Ohio, he was part of the pioneering generation that pushed westward following newly opened river corridors and the Erie Canal. Seeking fertile ground on the expanding frontier, James eventually relocated his family to Toulon in Stark County, Illinois, during the mid-nineteenth century. There, he cleared and broke prairie sod, utilizing improved iron plows and drainage techniques to transform the fertile prairie into a prosperous homestead. The arrival of regional rail connections in the 1850s linked Stark County farmers directly to grain markets in Chicago, dramatically expanding commercial farming opportunities. During the American Civil War, James managed his farm through intense wartime labor shortages while Stark County mobilized soldiers and supplied immense quantities of grain and livestock to Union armies. James lived through the post-war expansion and the market shocks of the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, passing away in Stark County in 1872 after establishing a lasting agricultural legacy for his children.
