What was happening

In context

Annen Bracht lived a remarkable seventy-six-year life characterized by tenacity and survival through the most catastrophic conflict in early modern European history. Born around 1610 at Hof Vahlhausen Amt Detmold Nr. 6 to Vollspänner Lüdeke Bracht, she was only twelve when her father died on the eve of the Thirty Years' War. As the Anerbin of the estate, Annen bore the immense burden of maintaining the ancestral property amidst three decades of relentless marauding, forced quartering, and ruinous levies by Protestant and Catholic armies alike. In April 1638, she married Johann Middeke, who took the surname "Middeke wird Bracht" to legally preserve the estate. Following Johann's death, she remarried in 1653 to Johann Betge, who also adopted the Bracht name. Together, they led the post-war agrarian reconstruction of the farm after the 1648 Peace of Westphalia. In her elder years, Annen retired to the farm's dower cottage (Leibzucht), surviving the severe plague epidemic of 1666 before passing away in September 1686 as an honored matriarch of Vahlhausen.
