What was happening

In context

Warren Robert Kloepping, affectionately known throughout Dawson County as 'Red', lived nine decades closely anchored to the central Nebraska prairie. Born near Lexington in October 1922 to Burrell and Minnie Kloepping, he grew up working on the family farm during the severe trials of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1939, gaining an enduring appreciation for agricultural life and mechanical trades. In 1944, at the height of World War II, Warren enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably until his discharge in 1946. Returning to central Nebraska, he married Anna Jewell Williams in 1947, building a home and raising six children. As rural Nebraska diversified beyond sole reliance on traditional farming, Warren joined Monroe Auto Equipment in Cozad, where he worked faithfully for two decades while cultivating expansive vegetable gardens and serving as a charter member of the local Elks Lodge. Rooted in the fellowship of the Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church, Warren spent his long retirement witnessing the modernization of the Platte Valley before his passing in 2013.
