What was happening

In context

Christoph Henrich Kuhlemann lived his seventy-seven years as an established peasant farmer in the Principality of Lippe during the waning decades of the Holy Roman Empire and the Napoleonic era. Born at Hof Meinberg Nr. 20 in November 1753, he experienced his earliest childhood against the backdrop of the Seven Years' War, which brought military quartering and economic distress to Westphalia. Inheriting the hereditary title of Colon on the family farm, Christoph Henrich assumed extensive agrarian responsibilities. In October 1779, he married Anna Marie Galius Schlingmann, raising a family that included sons Simon Henrich and Johann Henrich. His middle years were shaped by profound geopolitical turmoil, as Napoleon dissolved the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, forcing Lippe into the Confederation of the Rhine. Christoph Henrich faced heavy French tax assessments and wartime livestock levies before witnessing the liberation of northwest Germany following the 1813 Battle of Leipzig. He weathered the disastrous harvest failures of 1816 and lived to see the promulgation of Lippe's first constitution in 1819 before passing away in Meinberg in December 1830.
