In context
William McCance lived an expansive eighty-eight-year life that bridged the American colonial era, the founding of the republic, and the rapid settlement of the Old Northwest. Born in Pennsylvania on the eve of the French and Indian War, he grew to maturity during the American Revolution, enduring the privations and political upheavals that accompanied national independence. In the 1790s, amidst the frontier tensions of the Whiskey Rebellion, William joined the tide of settlers pushing westward into the fertile Miami Valley of Ohio. Settling in Liberty Township, Butler County, around the time Ohio achieved statehood in 1803, he married Eleanor Armstrong in 1805 and farmed through the frontier conflicts of the War of 1812. In the late 1820s, William relocated his large family to newly organized Hancock County, Indiana. Clearing homestead land in Sugar Creek Township, he became an active civic and spiritual leader, serving as an election inspector, school land trustee, and deacon of the Little Sugar Creek Christian Church. Living into his late eighties, William passed away in Sugar Creek Township in February 1844, having witnessed the wilderness transform into thriving agricultural communities.
