What was happening

In context

Anna Marie Galius Schlingmann lived her life within the rural parish of Meinberg in the Principality of Lippe across a period of profound European upheaval. Born around 1758 at Hof Meinberg Nr. 45 to Colon Johann Egidius Amelung wird Schlingmann and Anna Catharina Schlingmann, she grew up in a close-knit farming community slowly rebuilding from the devastation of the Seven Years' War. In October 1779, she married Colon Christoph Henrich Kuhlemann, taking up domestic management of Hof Meinberg Nr. 20. Over the following decades, Anna Marie raised several children, including Simon Henrich Kuhlmann, while managing dairy, spinning, and food preservation under the customary agrarian system. Her adult years coincided with the Napoleonic Wars, which brought intense anxiety as Lippische youth were conscripted into French armies, followed by heavy military quartering as Allied forces advanced through Westphalia in 1813. She steered her household through the severe food shortages and inflated bread prices of the 1816 'Year Without a Summer.' Anna Marie spent her twilight years on Hof Meinberg Nr. 20, passing away around 1825.
